The article highlights four key issues contributing to the Medical Misinformation Mess: unreliable or uncertain published medical research, lack of awareness among healthcare professionals, lack of critical appraisal skills, and lack of relevant, accurate medical evidence for patients during decision-making.

Many published medical research studies are unreliable and offer no benefit to patients. Most healthcare professionals are not aware of the issue and lack the skills to evaluate the reliability of medical evidence. The result is a significant amount of waste in healthcare and preventable harm to patients. The focus of addressing the Medical Misinformation Mess is on improving clinician and patient decision-making through training in critical appraisal and communication skills.
